Eight Sleep Pod
vs.
BedJet 3

The Eight Sleep Pod is a foam mattress with integrated sleep tracking and a cooling and warming water-based (hydronic) top layer called the “ActiveGrid”. We compare the Eight Sleep Pod to the BedJet 3, an air-based climate comfort sleep system for beds that can be integrated on any mattress of choice and used with any sleep tracker. While both products are effective solutions for sleep temperature control, we tested each side by side in our engineering lab to demonstrate their differences.

The Eight Sleep Pod was installed per the manufacturer’s instructions and not modified in any way.
(Except when it was poked with a sharp pointy object during an abuse test!)

Abuse Test
Water vs. Air: Water Leaks

Home owners know water can find ways to be in places you don’t want it. Leaky plumbing, leaky roofs, dripping faucets! The Eight Sleep Pod water-based (hydronic) system circulates pressurized water into your bed. Abuse friendly? We’re not sure, take a look at the video. The air-based BedJet uses absolutely no water—you wouldn’t even notice an air leak.

Eight Sleep Water vs. BedJet Air:
Water Doesn't Dry Sweat

Comfort in bed isn’t just about temperature, it’s also about sweat. Humidity in the microclimate under your sheets can rise 20% from trapped body perspiration, a big factor in feeling hot and stuffy. Water pad systems like Eight Sleep Pod simply cannot dry sweat or pull trapped body moisture out of the sheets. BedJet’s silky quiet air circulating technology is clinically proven to rapidly pull body moisture out of the bed. BedJet even has a proprietary sweat-drying mode to keep you fresh, dry, and comfortable all night long. Watch the Sweat Test to see for yourself. (Sweat Test shows a generic cooling mattress and not the Eight Sleep Pod.)

Cooling and Warming Drag Race

We verified that Eight Sleep Pod can provide mattress surface temperature control and true dual zone temperature capability. But which product is more powerful and faster at cooling (heat removal) and warming? Take a look at the infrared camera drag race. BedJet’s air based ultra-rapid cooling and warming leaves the water based Eight Sleep Pod standing still. Eight Sleep Pod water temperature adjustments can take up to 10 minutes to feel, where powerful BedJet air based cooling and warming is felt within seconds.

Eight Sleep Pod "Active Grid" is PVC

Per the manufacturer, the Active Grid in the Eight Sleep Pod is constructed of a molded polyvinyl chloride (PVC) material located at the very top of the mattress. Consumers should do their own research on PVC as a material they would choose to be in extended close proximity for sleep. Our engineers would have strongly recommended a more expensive thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) material for the Eight Sleep Active Layer. TPU is typically more durable than PVC and is considered medical and food grade safe with zero off-gassing and none of the concerns associated with PVC. BedJet contains absolutely no PVC.

Impact on Mattress Comfort

The Eight Sleep Pod’s cooling and warming ActiveGrid can only be used with the Eight Sleep mattress. We found the molded PVC ActiveGrid quite thick and non-stretchy, changing the performance and feel of the Eight Sleep mattress. We also found it could shift, giving a lumpy appearance and the lumps could be felt. BedJet can be used on any mattress and does not change the feel or performance of the mattress itself, with no water pads, wires or other “layers” to sleep on top of. All cooling and warming is done above and around you under the sheets. With BedJet, you also won’t be stuck with one manufacturer’s vision of a “perfect” foam mattress that may or not suit you, you can choose any mattress brand or style you like. And when it’s time to get a new mattress, your investment isn’t lost, you can simply move your BedJet to the new mattress.

Maintenance

The air-based BedJet is a nearly maintenance free product. Simply remove the lifetime washable air filter and rinse clean in the sink once every three months. The Eight Sleep Pod water-based system requires regular refilling every 3–4 weeks using only distilled water. A tablespoon of a chemical cleaning agent (hydrogen peroxide) is also required within the hub unit and ActiveGrid.

Remote Controls

Eight Sleep App
  • Controlled only by smartphone/tablet app
  • Cool & warm power settings of -10 to 10
  • No temperature regulation by degree
  • No dynamic compensation for bedroom temperature changes
  • Can set temperature vs. time
  • Requires WiFi connection to operate
BedJet 3 Remote + App
  • Use remote control or app; so you can turn your phone off at night if you wish
  • Regulate bed temperature by degrees (above ambient)
  • 20 different fan settings for airflow
  • Dynamic compensation for bedroom temperature changes
  • More individually tailored sleep settings
  • Can set temperature vs. time

Bedroom Appeal

The low profile air based BedJet 3 can be hidden away under the bed, barely noticeable when the bed is made. The base unit of the water based Eight Sleep Pod is a much larger and taller than the BedJet 3 and must be placed somewhere along the sides or base of the bed. It cannot be placed under the bed.

Pricing

For the price of an Eight Sleep Pod Queen-sized setup, you can get a Dual Zone BedJet 3 system (two units and a Queen sheet) and a mattress-based sleep tracker... and still have a cool $1560 left to get the perfect mattress just right for you.

Amazon Reviews

Manufacturers have total control over website posted reviews, so we look to third party sources like Amazon for unfiltered customer feedback. BedJet is one of the highest customer reviewed products in the entire mattress category on All of Amazon. While the Eight Sleep Pod has not been offered on Amazon, other prior products from Eight Sleep do have Amazon reviews including their stand-alone mattress and mattress-integrated sleep tracker. Some of these products have since been pulled from sale on Amazon, but the reviews remain. Compared to BedJet, Eight Sleep engineers do not yet seem to have developed a track record of well-reviewed products on Amazon.
